Ethical Consideration for School-Based Psychologists-Dr. Erich Merkle

Event Date: 1/14/2025
Start Time: 9:30 AM
End Time: 11:30 AM
Location: Virtual via Zoom

Registration Details:

Disputive processes oftentimes occur within our support of students that can quickly escalate into litigation experiences. Educators, and especially school psychologists, as helping professionals, oftentimes are poorly equipped to navigate the unique circumstances in preparing documentation and providing testimony within these applied forensic settings. While not intended as a course in forensic practice or law, this educational practitioner-focused session will examine various court-based sessions in child welfare, special education, and Section 504 to develop background documentation and testimony skills to successfully navigate these challenging experiences that intersect the classroom with the courtroom.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will examine multiple educational practice pathways that can lead into disputive processes
culminating in litigation.
2. Attendees will briefly explore common areas of documentation typically required in various educational
legal events.
3. Learners will identify key approaches to providing effective testimony from the context of an
educational practitioner.
4. Participants will express appropriate self-care techniques to recover from the challenges of engaging in
legal testimony experiences.

Special Note: This session could fulfill legal / ethics training requirements for school psychologists.
